Chester mayor drops plan to suspend cop
A lot has happened in Chester since Friday.
First, Mayor Wendell Butler called for the suspension of an officer who fatally shot a 21-year-old earlier this month. Then a Facebook page went live, supporting Chester’s law enforcement. Now Butler says he’s backing off the decision to suspend, calling the officer “exemplary.”
So what happened, exactly? The Delaware County Daily Times tells the full story here, which dates back to Aug. 5 when an unnamed officer killed Daniel Francis Simms after Simms displayed a weapon during a foot pursuit. Simms’ family has been protesting outside the police station.
The officer is not subject to suspension because he is on “injured on duty” status stemming from an injury during the Simms incident.
