A spin on classic comfort foods coming to former Bisou location in Manayunk

This summer, the duo behind Main Street Manayunk’s Taqueria Feliz is at it again with Beast and Ale — their latest creation. 

Just over six months ago Main Street welcomed Taqueria Feliz, the third succession of successful Mexican eateries cooked up by restaurateurs Brian Sirhal and Tim Spinner (also of Cantina Feliz in Fort Washington and La Calaca Feliz in Fairmount).

Beast and Ale, which is anticipated to open mid-June at 4161 Main St. (formerly Bisou Bistro) will be “an updated version of your classic greasy spoon and diner fare,” promised owner Brian Sirhal.

The menu, created by Spinner and Beast and Ale’s executive chef, Matthew Savastano (former sous chef at La Calaca Feliz), will feature hot roast beef sandwiches drowned in gravy and provolone cheese; a signature double patty “Beast Burger” topped with American cheese; fried green beans; dips and spreads served with toasted breads as well as a handful of “breakfast for dinner” options.

A rotation of eight drafts and a modest bottle selection will be complemented by wines by the glass or bottle and a list of classic, simple cocktails.

“The opportunity to acquire the space just fell into our lap,” said Sirhal, but with Taqueria Feliz only blocks away the pair knew a new concept was in order.

Research into the successes and needs of the dining establishments along Main Street combined with their own food favorites is how Beast and Ale was born.

“While we’re still focused on building our Mexican restaurants, we wanted to go in a direction that was a little different and allows our talented staff to keep growing in new ways,” said Spinner. “We’ll be serving the comfort foods that Brian and I often eat and we hope everyone else will crave it too.”

The name, which is a play on the classic “Beef and Ale” lends itself to a decor of “hunting lodge meets diner” with taxidermy animal busts, plush booths, vintage wallpaper, a central chandelier and wrought iron railings.

The intimate space will occupy about 70 guests and boasts a second floor deck perfect for overlooking Manayunk in the warmer months.

“We’re excited to be venturing to a new concept,” Sirhal said. “We think the community is going to find Beast and Ale approachable in food, style and price.”
