5 winter weekend activities for the family
Although the winter lull has creeped in, Philly still has some family weekend fun going on to help cure that cabin fever.
Saturday and Sunday: Valentine Make-in
This works as a drop-off for kids ages six and up, or as a family activity for younger children. Tap into your creative side and use a variety of materials to create valentines for your loved ones at Mindy Flexer’s Art School. Light refreshments included. $10/person or $20/family.
Saturday: One Book, Many Ballets
Help kick-off the One Book, One Philadelphia celebration with the Pennsylvania Ballet. Families can head to the Central Library for a performance in the Montgomery Auditorium at 1 p.m. Dancers will explore themes from this year’s book, “Orphan Train.”
What happens int the Schuylkill River in the winter? What do the fish and other animals do when the water gets cold? Head to the Fairmount Water Works to find out! Learn about how the fish cope with the chilly temps and even make your own fish to take home. 2 to 4 p.m., 30 minute sessions.
Saturday: Giants of the Forest
Bundle up and trek around the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education for their guided tour of tress in the winter forest. Learn about both the science and the history of the trees. Giants tour starts at 10 a.m.
Saturday and Sunday: “Pete the Cat” story time
Who doesn’t love Pete? He’s blue and he’s a cat…he’s a BLUE CAT! And a pretty cool one, to boot. Bring your PTC fan to Nest Philadelphia for some story time, some play time, some craft time, and some snack time, all centered around the smoothest blue cat in town.
