5 weekend activities for your family
Here’s a look at what’s going on this weekend.
Summer is in full swing, and the Wyck Farners Market is stocked with farm fresh produce. This week’s treats include a rainbow of colors to explore: summer squash, eggs, beets, carrots, blueberries, raspberries and even cut flowers. The stand runs every Friday through Thanksgiving from 2 to 6 p.m., with SNAP & FMNP accepted. While you’re there, take the kids through the tour of the Historic Wyck House between noon and 4 p.m.
Friday: Field Science at Wagner
Join the naturalists and ecologists at the Wagner Free Institute of Science for “Fridays in the Field.” Help count birds for the Cornell program, observe bees, butterflies and insects in the sweeping yard, learn how to identify dichotomous tress, and sketch what you find in nature. The hour-long programs run on Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and are free, with donations accepted.
Friday through Sunday: Head to the Oval
The Oval is up, running, and better and brighter than ever. So head on over the the fabulous Eakins Oval (on the Parkway, right in front of the Art Museum) and enjoy the gorgeous new “Summer Kaleidoscope” mural under your feet. There’s always something going on for children and their parents. This weekend’s lineup includes a farm explorer, movie screening, food trucks, karaoke, artsy face painting, soccer, tennis, and quizzo!
Friday through Sunday: Art Splash
While you’re in the neighborhood, connect the outdoor fun at The Oval with a trip to the Art Museum (after you run up the steps Rocky style, of course). The Philadelphia Museum of Art offers creative play for children and families all summer long with family workshops and tours, splash studio, a hands-on Art Cart in the galleries, and a guided alphabet tour you can navigate on an iPad (provided).
Nothing screams summer more than treehouses! Channel your inner Annie and Jack and enjoy the masterful treehouse during Tyler Arboretum’s Tree House Festival. Tyler is a quick drive from the city, and in addition to climbing in and out of the wonderful structures, Sunday visitors will be treated to The Woodmobile, the Zoo-on-Wheels, and gourmet pizza (for purchase). 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
