5 family activities to check out this weekend

It will be another gorgeous weekend and here’s a set of fun event for you and your family to check out.
Friday: Comic Book Workshop for Kids
Join published comic book authors and illustrators in a hands-on workshop designed for budding artists. Jason Rodriguez, author of Colonial Comics: New England, will lead a workshop designed to show kids how to blend make history come to life through comics. Ages 8 to 16. Big Blue Marble Bookstore at 4:30 p.m.
Friday: My Son Matters opening reception
Enjoy a beautiful photo exhibition of local single moms and their sons. This show was imagined by local photographer Denise Allen. The show features stunning portraits of mothers and sons, with accompanying commentary designed to re-frame how African-American males are viewed. Moving, meaningful and child-friendly. Opening reception starts at 6 p.m. The show runs through May 31.
Friday through Sunday: Second Nature at the Zoo
With Earth Day on the horizon next week, why not celebrate a bit early with the Second Nature exhibit at the Philadelphia Zoo? Enjoy the work of artists from around the globe who’ve used found, repurposed and recycled objects to make art. You’ll see a giant Blue Gorilla made out of car steel, polar bear cubs made from spark plugs, and an 8 feet long, 200 pound pink crocodile made of… chewing gum. Be there and be inspired! Runs through Halloween.
An age-old favorite first orchestra experience, Peter and the Wolf tells the tale of both animals and instruments. Hear the Philadelphia Orchestra spin Prokofiev’s accessible and catchy story (can’t you just hear Peter’s walking music in your head as you read this?). This one is sure to entertain novice concert goers. At the Kimmel Center at 11:30 a.m.
Friday through Sunday: Final Weekend for Titanaboa
This weekend is the last call for the giant Colombian snake on display at Drexel’s Academy of Natural Sciences. At 48 feet in length, and weighing in at 2,500 pounds, this full scale model of the largest snake in the world is not to be missed. Unless, of course, you hate snakes!
