Philadelphia gets a female sheriff for a while
Soon there will be a new Sheriff in Philadelphia. It could be the first woman to occupy the office.
Barbara Deeley has been picked by Governor Ed Rendell to finish the term of former Sheriff John Green, who retired on Friday. Deeley says she has agreed not to run for re-election this year as part of her appointment.
“I’m the first female sheriff when I close the door behind me I want the media, the citizens of Philadelphia and the Governor and Sheriff Green and the Mayor to say in the year she was there she did a good job and that was that,” said Deeley. You are going to see the first changes I propose by the end of the week if not the beginning of next.”
Deeley says the office has nothing to hide, but there is an upcoming audit after the Philadelphia City Controller found what he thought were numerous irregularities with the office. Deeley has pledged complete cooperation. Her appointment still needs approval from the Pennsylvania State Senate.
