Million-dollar blocks

Listen 00:48:45

Guests: Christopher Moraff, CJ Smith, Eric Cadora

In this hour we’ll talk about “million-dollar blocks” — areas where more than $1 million is being spent each year to incarcerate the residents of a single census block. We’ll find out where these blocks are and why researchers and some residents are troubled by their presence. Philadelphia-based freelance journalist CHRISTOPHER MORAFF and North Philadelphia native CJ SMITH will describe their experiences on one “million dollar block” in North Philadelphia. And ERIC CADORA, director of the Justice Mapping Center will explain his work mapping the characteristics, scale, and policy implications of locally concentrated criminal justice populations migrating between prison and home in neighborhoods, cities, and states around the country.
