Listen

unemployedHour 1

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned this week that unemployment rates could still rise in the coming months.  Currently 14.6 million Americans are unemployed.  Close to half of the unemployed have been jobless for 27 weeks – more than half a year.  Studies show that the longer people are out of work, the harder it is to find work.   In addition, a number of negative health effects are tied to chronic unemployment including — stress, anxiety, depression and substance abuse.  Today, we’ll talk about long-term joblessness and the consequences to individuals, their families, and the country.  Our guests are CARL VAN HORN, the Director of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University and DON PECK, deputy managing editor of The Atlantic
