In his State of the Union speech, President Obama called for the repeal of the 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Last Tuesday, Admiral Mullen and Defense Secretary Gates presented the Pentagon’s proposal for ending the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy to the Senate Armed Services Committee. Should gay men and lesbians be allowed to serve openly in the military? And is now the time to try to change the policy.
