RACHEL PRUCHNO has seen many sides of mental illness. Her mother committed suicide after years of struggling with depressions and her adopted daughter suffers from bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. A Professor of Medicine at Rowan University, Pruchno has written a memoir about the devastation mental illness has on the entire family called Surrounded by Madness: A Memoir of Mental Illness and Family Secrets. This hour she comes in to talk with guest host Mary Cummings-Jordan about the stigmas that still surround mental illness and the challenges that families face in getting treatment for their adult children.
