How Technology is Changing the Role of the Doctor
ListenDoes your doctor use a computer at your appointment? Or maybe a smart phone? Technology has always been an important part of medicine, giving doctors better tools to detect, treat and mend their patients but today’s new smart technologies are altering the role of the physician in ways different from the past. This hour, we’ll look at how technology is changing how physicians practice medicine. Marty talks with University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine’s Chief Medical Information Officer, WILLIAM HANSON about his new book, Smart Medicine: How the Changing Role of Doctors Will Revolutionize Health Care. But while medical advances might promise improved care, not everyone can access them. A recent study from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that children covered by Medicaid or CHIP had to wait twice as long as those with private insurance to get a sick appointment and some couldn’t get an appointment at all. Marty talks about the findings with KARIN RHODES, one of the study’s authors and Director of Emergency Care Policy and Research at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine.
