The Supreme Court’s ruling on the constitutional right of same-sex couples to marry is expected any day now. Whatever the justices’ decision on Obergefell v. Hodges, it will have enormous impact on the lives of gay couples. But in 2013 there was another landmark case in the marriage equality fight — Hollingsworth v. Perry – which was the first federal trial on same-sex marriage and overturned California’s ban on known as Proposition 8. Constitutional law professor KENJI YOSHINO tells the story of this important case and its legacy in his new book, Speak Now: Marriage Equality on Trial: The Story of Hollingsworth v. Perry.
