Head over heels for shoes: Our love affair with footwear

Listen

Hour 2

Shoes, from sensible to stiletto, can garner many different reactions. Some people just want something comfortable to walk in but others get positively giddy just staring at the latest pump, peek-toe, wedge, Mary Jane or strappy sandal. So what is it about shoes that drive so many women crazy and even into credit card debt? Why are so many of us willing to hurt our soles for fashionable footwear?  According to writer RACHELLE BERGSTEIN we put a lot more into shoes than just our blistered feat.  Bergstein is the author of a new history, “Women from the Ankle Down: The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us.”  We’ll talk to her about our relationship with shoes.  And forgot Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo’s, it’s the Converse Weapon and the original Air Jordan that give these two brothers the chills. We’ll talk to the Shoe Kings, DARIEN GANS and BYRON GANS, who own a vintage sneaker store in Camden, New Jersey where “old sneakers never die.”
