Frans de Waal on animal intelligence

Listen 00:48:46

Guest: Frans de Waal

How smart are animals?  Biologists have been studying animal intelligence for years in the wild and in laboratories.  They’ve used mirrors, mazes, computers and pill bottles to test the IQs of all kinds of creatures from elephants to octopuses.  But renowned primatologist FRANS DE WAAL says that we’ve sorely underestimated the animal brain. In fact, humans may not be capable of understanding just how clever animals really are. De Waal talks to Marty about what we’re learning about animal minds and about his new book Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are?  De Waal is a professor in Emory University’s psychology department and director of the Living Links Center at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center.
