First for May 18, 2018

Are we there yet?
Memorial day will be upon us next weekend. That means the summer driving season kicks into high gear. For those traveling on Delaware route one to the beaches, it means checking on the construction of the Rt. 301 bypass. The first time we checked out the construction was in 2016. We’ve updated it and provided you the context of why we need the road in our First Look.

Summer gas prices
Traffic will be increasing over the summer month and so will gas prices. We talked to Ken Grant at AAA to learn more about the car club’s predictions for summer travel and prices at the pump.

First Person: Jazz, Blues and The Queen
Acting cultural affairs director for the city of Wilmington, Tina Betz and the general manager of The Queen in Wilmington, Trenton Banks talk about upcoming music festivals and what’s new at The Queen in Wilmington.

The Robotics class
With traditional public schools continuing to lose students to charter and magnet schools, education leaders are always looking for ways to brand their school with an innovative program. At Red Clay’s Dickinson High School, one tech initiative has an eye on an increasingly autonomous future. Delaware Education Reporter Cris Barrish tells us how this approach is inspiring and attracting students.

The Tornoe Spin: Sports betting
As Delaware prepares to expand its betting offerings after the U.S. Supreme Court decision to allow sports betting nationwide, editorial cartoonist Rob Tornoe joins us to talk about what that means for college sports and student athletes.

First Experience: The Oddporium
Ken and Beth Schuler both grew up in Arden, Delaware. After Ken lost his job they decided to take their strange collections and opened the Oddporium. It’s part museum and part store. It’s creepy, it’s kooky, it’s odd, and it’s our First Experience this week.
