Asteroids falling towards Earth

Listen

The asteroid that hit Russia seemed like quite a surprise, but over the last decade scientists have been trying to identify asteroids to see what might be on a trajectory for Earth and what might cause a problem. 100 tons of material a day falls into the Earths atmosphere, but this is the sand grain stuff that is of no consequence. The object that hit Russia was very large and objects that size are not that common. So, what do we do with an asteroid heading our way? Don’t blow it up. The slow and steady approach is much better by effecting its trajectory with a couple different methods. Also, find out what’s in the night sky this week. All this and more on this week’s Sky Talk.
