The emotional lives of boys and men
Listen 00:48:45Guests: Andrew Reiner, Niobe Way and John DiMino
Close friends are essential to enjoying life’s joys and surviving its worst sorrows. Yet men often have trouble maintaining tight friendships, and shy away from crying in front of their buddies. In this hour of Radio Times, Marty will be joined by ANDREW REINER, who teaches writing, literature and cultural studies at Towson University, to talk about his New York Times essay about why we need to help men learn emotional honesty. He’s also written for the Washington Post magazine about his crusade to cry in public. We’ll also talk with NIOBE WAY, the author of Deep Secrets: Boys’ Friendships and the Crisis of Connection, about why men often dissolve the intensely intimate bonds they had during their youth. And for some first-person experience we’ll turn to clinical psychologist JOHN DIMINO, director of Temple University’s Tuttleman Counseling Services, who will share what he’s heard and learned while counseling college students over the past twenty years.
