The Nairobi mall attack and what it says about the fight against terrorism

Listen

In the aftermath of the siege on a Nairobi mall that killed an estimated 67 people and injured hundreds, we’ll look at group responsible for the attack and what it all says about stability in the region and the global fight against terrorism. We’ll start off with an update on the investigation and the response within Kenya from NPR East Africa correspondent GREGORY WARNER. Then we’ll talk to two East Africa experts – BRONWYN BRUTON from the Atlantic Council and Ambassador DAVID SHINN – both of whom have extensive experience in Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia. We’ll hear about al-Shebab’s motivations, make-up, recruitment efforts in the U.S. and abroad, and the possibility of future threats from the al Qaeda linked organization, as well as the history of Kenya’s involvement in Somalia, and the implications for U.S. policy in the Horn of Africa.
