Urban Outfitters expansion means 2,000 new jobs for Philadelphia

A major Philadelphia employer is expanding with the help of some state incentives.
Urban Outfitters plans to double its workforce in Philadelphia to 4,000 — as well as adding another distribution center in Lancaster County with 500 new jobs as part of the deal.
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley said the Philadelphia-based company is spending a great deal of money to expand.
“This investment by Urban Outfitters is about $210 million, which will go to expand employment right here in Pennsylvania,” Cawley said Monday.
Richard Hayne, CEO of Urban Outfitters, said the company had options other than Pennsylvania.
“We were courted by a number of areas in a number of other states,” he said. “It was always No. 1 on our lists to remain in Philadelphia and to put our fulfillment capabilities in Gap, Pennsylvania.”
The expansion will occur over about a five-year period with the hires being phased in gradually.

The city’s historical commission would have the final say on any modifications to the building’s Grand Court, home to the famed eagle and organ.
