Thousands of Delmarva Power customers in the dark

Thousands of Delmarva Power customers are spending their snow day in the dark after heavy snow caused power outages though the company’s service territory in northern Delaware and northeast Maryland.

As of 11 a.m., more than 14,000 customers were without power.  The majority of those were in Cecil (9,010) and Harford (3,629) Counties in Maryland.  584 homes were in the dark in New Castle County.

Customers can call Delmarva Power to report an outage.  In New Castle County, that number is 1-800-898-8042.  Residents in Kent and Sussex can call 1-800-898-8045.

The company reminds residents to follow some simple safety tips during a power outage:

·        Stay away from downed lines and report them immediately.

·        Never attempt to remove trees or limbs from any utility line.   Assume all objects touching a power line are energized.

·        If using a portable generator during a power outage, always operate it outside. Do not operate a portable generator near doors, windows or in garages to prevent deadly carbon monoxide from entering the house.

You can monitor the status of power outages on Delmarva Power’s website.
