Snow could fall at 2 inches per hour in New Jersey

A winter storm arriving in New Jersey this morning is expected to dump heavy wet snow at a rate that could create dangerous driving conditions. Forecasters said we could see as much as 2 inches of snow per hour in some areas.

At 4 a.m. the National Weather Service said the snow line extended from just northwest of the Philadelphia area across northern New Jersey to just north of Long Island.

Snowfall predictions

Central and Northern New Jersey – 8-11 inches of snow
Southern Jersey – 3-6 inches of snow

The National Weather Service said it expects significant impacts for drivers Thursday morning because, in addition to heavy snow, gusty winds (15-40 mph) will reduce visibility.

The heavy wet snow is also expected to stick to tree branches, increasing the chance that power lines could get knocked down.

Minor coastal flooding is expected during this morning’s high tide between 6 and 8 a.m. mainly from Ocean County and southward to Cape May.
