Should N.J. return to carbon-curbing pact?
State Senate President Stephen Sweeney is attempting to require New Jersey to re-enter a multistate carbon pollution reduction program through legislation.
The Senate’s Environment Committee will hear a bill on the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative on Thursday.
A state appellate court ruled Tuesday that Gov. Chris Christie improperly withdrew from the pact in 2011. The court did not address the withdrawal itself, but said the administration circumvented its own rulemaking procedures.
The court ordered state environmental regulators to take steps to properly repeal the regulations.
Sweeney’s bill would keep New Jersey in the pact, whose goal is to reduce pollution from fossil fuel-burning power plants.
The Republican governor likely would veto the legislation if it makes it to his desk.
