Suspect killed in Philly identified; cop treated for injury

Authorities have released the name of a man who shot and wounded a Philadelphia police officer before police returned fire, killing the gunman.

 

The dead gunman was identified as 29-year-old David Ellis of Philadelphia.

Officers responding to a report of a person with a gun in the city’s Tacony section shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday spotted Ellis, who began firing at several officers as soon as they arrived, hitting a police van, authorities said.

Officer Steve Korpalski was grazed in the left side of his head by a bullet, police said. He was treated at a hospital and released.
