Sculptural bike racks debut at Flower Show

Bike racks don’t always have to be plain old U-shaped utilitarian pieces of street furniture. They can be street sculptures, opportunities to add texture or whimsy to the public environment. We shared the winners of a competition for artist-designed bike racks back in January and this week we got to see seven of the 10 winning designs in living color. They’re on display in the Convention Center’s Great Hall as part of this year’s Flower Show. So if you’re among the throngs rejecting winter and hitting up the Flower Show (running through Sunday), be sure to a peek at these new artworks now before they hit the streets of Center City this summer.

The competition was a joint project of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and the City of Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, and made possible thanks to a Knight Arts Challenge grant and private donors.
