Report documents ethics failings on MLK High School
Philadelphia’s Chief Integrity Officer has released her report about allegations of back-door dealing in selecting a company to run Martin Luther King High School.
The 21-page report details how former School Reform Commission chairman Robert Archie facilitated State Representative Dwight Evans’ campaign to help Foundations Inc. win a contract to run Martin Luther King High School. Archie and Evans even held a closed-door meeting with the head of a competing school operator to convince him to drop out of the running .
Mayor Michael Nutter’s spokesman Mark McDonald says the report speaks for itself.
“The mayor has accepted the report and thinks it is an accurate description of the situation,” said McDonald. “It is not something in city government we would condone.”
McDonald says Archie and other the SRC appointees did not have the ethics training city employees get.
“The mayor expects appointees to act responsibly and openly and fairly and if your role is to be the referee of a process then one should act accordingly,” he said.
Archie resigned Monday. The Nutter administration is urging the SRC to provide ethics training to all members of the commission.
