Property tax increase said to be part of Nutter’s Philly budget

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter makes his budget address tomorrow 

Sources tell NewsWorks that Nutter will call for increasing property taxes.

The School District is asking for more than $100 million in new funding so that’s explains why Mayor Nutter will ask for a 9 percent property tax increase.

Democrat Curtis Jones says it’s not all bad news.  The state budget could mean good news for Philadelphia.

“There’s always challenges but this is the best position we have been in considering our partners in Harrisburg have to come up with their end of the bargain,” he said.

Councilman Dennis O’Brien says people should not consider Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget a “done deal.”

“Issues that we are going to finalize in our budget are contingent on what is going to happen in Harrisburg and thatcertainly not a clear conversation yet,” O’Brien said.
