Philly submits bid for 2016 Democratic convention
The city of Philadelphia is competing to host the Democratic convention in 2016.
Mayor Michael Nutter says officials made a “very competitive” bid on Friday, which was the deadline for submissions.
The convention is where the party nominates its presidential candidate. The Democratic National Committee announced earlier that 15 cities, including Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, would be invited to bid.
Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto said Friday the city wouldn’t bid because of the price tag. Most cities expect the convention to cost between $55 million and $60 million.
However, the event also generates a lot of local spending by thousands of delegates, journalists, politicians and staff.
The DNC is expected to make a decision later this year or in early 2015.
Philadelphia hosted the Republican convention in 2000.
