Philly officials look forward to health, economic benefits of medical marijuana

Now that Pennsylvania has approved the use of medical marijuana, Philadelphia City Council members held a hearing to explore what will go into implementing that law in the city.

Councilman Derek Green said many groups will be affected by the medical marijuana regulations from cancer patients to parents of children with autism.

“In Pennsylvania, we have both an oil and pill form,” he said. “And so, for some of the children, for their ability to manage stress and issues, medical marijuana can help in that regard.”

Councilman Al Taubenberger pointed out the business opportunities. The state law calls for establishing 25 grow houses and up to 198 dispensaries throughout Pennsylvania.

“An opportunity for economic growth in the city of Philadelphia that is always looking for jobs and economic development,” he said.

The legislation also calls for research into the effectiveness of medical marijuana.
