Philly councilman takes fundraiser ‘down the Shore’
ListenA Philadelphia city councilman — and possible mayoral candidate — is having a summer fund-raiser, and he’s going where his constituents are this time of the year.
Why hold his “Shellfish Shindig” fundraiser in Margate? Councilman Jim Kenney says because the Jersey Shore is where his supporters are during a late summer weekend.
“This is a good area for me as far as people who appreciate my public service and want to see me continue and where they happen to be during a particular weekend in August,” he said. “It’s a prime opportunity. I’ve done them throughout my career and they have always been successful.”
Kenney said he will be back fundraising in Philadelphia after Labor Day.
“I’m having another fundraiser coming up in September. It’s an Eagles away game tailgate,” he said. “And they are back in September, watching football, so you try to to follow your sense as to where people are going to be.”
Kenney is not saying yet whether he will run for mayor next year, but his fundraising offers a convincing clue. To be a prime sponsor at the Margate event will set you back 1,500 clams.
