Philadelphia scientist wins ‘Best Scientist” award for Mongolian research

A Philadelphia scientist has been honored by the Mongolian Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism for his research on water quality monitoring work there.

Dr. Jon Gelhaus, an evolutionary biologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, has spent the last 15 years documenting the diversity of insects that live in or near freshwater and relating that diversity to patterns in evolution, ecology and water quality.
He’s been training Mongolian scientists and students to sustain the effort. The award now makes him the “Best Scientist in Nature and Environment”

Gelhaus curates the Academy’s Entomology Department, and recently gave NewsWorks a tour of the institution’s big collection during Bug Fest.
