Penn State, NCAA formalize integrity agreement

Penn State has agreed to select an integrity officer for its athletic programs and formalized the appointment of former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell as the independent monitor overseeing the university’s compliance with sanctions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

The Centre Daily Times reports the university and NCAA agreed to the terms of an Athletics Integrity Agreement on Tuesday, fulfilling one of its obligations under the association’s consent decree that included a $60 million fine, the loss of scholarships and a four-year bowl ban.

 

The new agreement includes oversight provisions as well as training and reporting requirements involving team monitors, the athletic director and a new Athletics Integrity Council.

Penn State has agreed to implement recommendations set forth in the university-ordered report by former FBI director Louis Freeh that found high-ranking school officials covered up abuse allegations involving Sandusky to avoid bad publicity.
