Parents of Drexel student arrested in Egypt hire lawyer who defended Amanda Knox
The parents of Drexel University student Gregory Porter have hired a lawyer now that their son has been arrested in Egypt for allegedly throwing firebombs in Tahrir Square, and they’ve turned to attorney Ted Simon.
NBC10 reports Porter’s parents are working with Simon, the lawyer who defended Amanda Knox in her Italian murder trial, to bring the 19-year-old home.
Porter and two other American students were arrested yesterday in Cairo during military protests in the square. He is majoring in international area studies and has been studying at American University in Cairo.
Now State Rep. Brendan Boyle is calling for the students’ release. He wrote to Field Marshall Mohammed Hussien Tantawi to have the students turned over to the embassy.
“Releasing these young men will further reassure United States citizens as to the stability and security of the Egyptian state,” Boyle wrote.
Boyle’s 170th Legislative District includes parts of Philadelphia and Montgomery County. He’s also an adjuct professor of public policy at Drexel.
