Pa. students ban ‘Redskins,’ get sent to principal

A brewing dispute at a high school near Philadelphia offers a twist on student free speech cases.

Student editors have voted to ban the words “Redskins” — the school mascot at football-crazed Neshaminy.

School officials object to the ban. Principal Robert McGee says every student has to publish an article in the Playwickian for course credit. He believes they’re entitled to write about the Neshaminy Redskins.

But student Editor Gillian McGoldrick says the editorial board fears the word may offend Native Americans.

Other media outlets around the country have likewise challenged the nickname of the Washington Redskins, who visit Philadelphia on Sunday.
