BOOK TALK: A Second Modernism
Monday, October 14, 6:30-8pm. PennDesign, Meyerson Hall, 210 South 34th Street. PennDesign will host a panel discussion about the dramatic shifts in post-war architecture, using the new book, A Second Modernism: MIT, Architecture, and the Techno-Social Moment as its jumping-off point. Panelists include the book’s editor, Arindam Dutta (MIT), and several contributors: Daniel Barber (PennDesign), John Harwood (Oberlin College), Eric Mumford (Washington University), and Anna Vallye(Philadelphia Museum of Art). Joan Ockman (PennDesign) will moderate the discussion. Free.
IMAGINE: The New Penn’s Landing
Tuesday, October 15, 7pm. Festival Pier, Columbus Boulevard at Spring Garden Street. Join the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation to learn about the new vision for Penn’s Landing: a large green park that slopes down to the river over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard between Chestnut and Walnut streets. Hargreaves Associates will present about their work so far in developing a new public environment on the waterfront. Free, register in advance online.
PROVOKE: Gray Area Presents Preservation Provocateurs: Post-Preservation
Wednesday, October 16, 6-8pm. UArts, Hamilton Hall, 320 S. Broad Street. Architect Shohei Shigematsu, co-curator of Rem Koolhaas’ controversial ‘Cronocaos’ exhibit in 2011, will discuss why he believes preservation is actually damaging to cities. Provocative? You bet. Free. This event is sold out but efforts will be made to accommodate walk-in guests.
LAUNCH: Philly Green: Exemplary Sustainable Architecture, Urban Planning & Design
Thursday, October 17. 5-7pm. Philadelphia Center for Architecture, 1281 Arch Street. Come for the opening of an exhibition on the best in Philly-area firms working on diverse sustainable design projects. Come meet green design practitioners, enjoy refreshments and take in the exhibit.
SNAP: Philly Photo Day
Friday, October 18, all day. Citywide, workshops at community centers. Take part in a citywide collective art project: Take a photo within the city limits and submit it online to the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center as part of a giant exhibit portraying a day in the life of our city. Each image submitted will be printed and displayed in a show at PPAC from November 14-December 28. Free.
