Newark Police try to ID more riot suspects

Newark Police have made just a handful of arrests following a street riot that sent hundreds of party goers through downtown Newark.  Now, investigators are looking for help identifying more students who took part.

The riot happened along S. College Ave. and Main St. on Monday night, September 9 following a party.  Hundreds of students streamed through the streets, blocking traffic and damaging some vehicles and street signs.  Police have charged the students who hosted the original party without the proper permits.  They’ve also arrested a pair of students who were seen in videos posted online climbing on top of a car, damaging it.

It’s those online videos along with surveillance footage from security cameras that Newark Police are using to try to identify some of the others involved in the street riot.  

They’ve released images of nearly a dozen people captured on camera during the incident.  They ask anyone who may be able to ID the people in the photos to call Detective Greg Micolucci at 302-366-7110, ext. 132, or email greg.micolucci@cj.state.de.us.  Anonymous tips can be texted to 302NPD using the message TIP411.

The incident was quickly condemned by University of Delaware school leaders.  “Make no mistake—this behavior will not be tolerated at the University of Delaware,” wrote UD President Patrick Harker in a sternly worded letter to the student body.
