New Scudders Falls Bridge will charge a toll

A new toll bridge is coming to the region… but motorists won’t have to pay until 2019.
The Scudders Falls Bridge, which connects I-95 between New Jersey and Pennsylvania, will be rebuilt beginning in early 2017 as part of a $370 million project. It will rely on cameras rather than tolltakers.
And yes, unlike the current bridge, the new one will charge a toll, said Joe Resta, Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission executive director.
“Our standard EZPass toll is 1.25. If you are bridge commission-affiliated transponder holder, if you are a frequent commuter, a commuter discount would be down to 75 cents,” he said.
Motorists who don’t have EZPass will receive a bill in the mail — at a much higher rate.
“They would be tolled via a photograph of their license plate, and that toll would be $2.60,” Resta said.
If approved, the plan is expected to take effect when the first section of the project is complete in 2019.
