New Jersey education officials revise, rename Common Core
State education officials say standards once known as Common Core will now be called the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
The state Board of Education gave its final approval Wednesday to the roadmap that outlines what students at each grade level should know.
Board President Mark Biedron tells NJ.com that officials tried to make sure the standards were “crystal clear” and age appropriate.
Most of the standards will remain the same.
But there will be some changes, such as when students should be able to distinguish between long and short vowel sounds.
The new standards will take effect in the 2017-2018 school year.
The changes come after Republican Gov. Chris Christie said last year that the Common Core standards were not working.
