New bridge at Delaware beaches finally lit up

The lights on the Indian River Inlet Bridge were turned on for the first time Thursday night, just ahead of the span’s first Memorial Day weekend in full operation.

A total of 92 lights bathe the structure in soft blue light to reduce the impact on migratory birds that can become distorted by tradition white lights.  The blue lights also blend with the bridge’s blue stay-cables.  76 low-wattage LED lights illuminate the bridge’s stay cables while 16 LED fixtures light up the outside faces of the pylons.

The new bridge, which officially opened to traffic in January, provides a much needed improvement over previous structures crossing the fast moving water in the Indian River Inlet.
