Nerds unite over books and beer

Self-proclaimed nerds of Philadelphia gathered at the Field House in Center City on Thursday night to learn about robots, psychedelics and the possibility of life on Mars.

Co-organizer of the event, Melissa McCartney admitted that science can sometimes be a turn off, so the need for “nerds” to come together is all the more important.

“It’s a lot of large vocabulary words and things that they don’t necessarily understand,” said McCartney.  “I think the point of Nerd Nite is to kind of dissolve that down to everyday language that people can understand.”

The inaugural Philadelphia Nerd Nite lured a crowd of more than 100 people.
