National Liberty Museum hosts HerStory: An Exhibition Exploring the History of Women in Glass Art

The National Liberty Museum debuted a stunning exhibit of internationally acclaimed women studio glass artists on February 13, 2013. “HerStory” explores the history of women in glass art and features works of more than twenty female glass artists that will be on display through May.

Glass art is the centerpiece of the National Liberty Museum. It’s the medium used by the Museum to promote non-violence and acceptance of others by showing visitors that freedom is “fragile”… like glass.

For centuries, only men worked in the field of glass art. It was felt that the work was too dangerous for women. The rise of the Studio Glass Movement in the early 1960s changed all of that, and today some of the most prominent names in the glass art world are female artists.

Acclaimed sand cast glass artist Marlene Rose of Clearwater, Florida presented a program and film about her artistic journey, “From Fire, An Odyssey of Glass.” “HerStory” was also the Philadelphia debut of glass jewelry artist Amy Lemaire, who just relocated to the area. One hundred glass enthusiasts, museum supporters and members enjoyed cocktails and appetizers during the exhibit opening.

The exhibit is a rare opportunity to see the works of glass jewelry artist Linda MacNeil, “Sculpture Magazine” artist Ginny Ruffner, internationally celebrated cast glass artist Toots Zynsky and blown glass innovators Flora Mace & Joey Kirkpatrick. All works remain available for purchase.
