Mt. Airy church gets green light to expand its daycare services

The city’s zoning board has approved New Covenant Church of Philadelphia’s request to operate a weekday daycare program on its Mt. Airy campus.

The church, located at 7500 Germantown Ave., already offers Sunday daycare during services, but wanted to expand its services.

No new constructions will be required for the daycare.

Albert Blackstock, chief financial officer at New Covenant, said the church is currently waiting on a permit from the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections, which he expects to arrive no more than 10 days after the church’s Nov. 27 hearing before the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

After the permit is granted, Blackstock said the space will need to be inspected by the city’s Department of Public Welfare. The inspection will determine the daycare’s capacity.

The daycare will be offered to children aged six weeks to two and a half years old. It will operate Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Blackstock said tuition has not yet been determined and will be depend on insurance costs. It will likely be competitive with area daycares, he said.
