Moyer principal remains committed to students despite uncertainty of Delaware charter [video]
New Principal Keenan Dorsey is taking a community approach to turning around troubled Moyer Academic Institute, a charter school serving approximately 200 students in Wilmington.
The Department of Education is threatening to shutter the school at the end of the school year due to poor academic performance. A decision was expected on Thursday. State education officials said they had not reviewed the documents or the public testimony in the case. That decision will be made at the board meeting on October 9th.
Dorsey, a former school counselor, said the charter school is a last stop for many students who have bounced around the state’s education system.
Most students are several grade levels behind and Dorsey said many are dealing with personal issues at home.
Despite the challenges, Dorsey said he’s committed to helping students reach their education goals.
