More N.J. unions sue over Christie plan to pare pension contribution
A group of unions for public workers is filing a new lawsuit to try to stop New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie from reducing the state’s contributions to pension programs for public workers.Unions representing teachers, police officers, local government worker and others filed the suit Friday.New Jersey Education Association spokesman Steve Baker says he expects it to be combined with a similar suit filed last week by unions for state troopers.
A hearing in the troopers’ suit is scheduled for June 25. That’s five days before lawmakers must adopt a balanced budget.
If a judge finds pension contributions cannot be cut, it would set off a scramble for ways to balance the budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.
