Long sentence for cop convicted of assaulting a student

    A jury today sentenced Tyrone Wiggins to 17 1/2 to 35 years in prison for sexually assaulting a former martial arts student of his.

    Wiggins, 51, must also pay a $10,000 and $5,000 to his victim, now a police officer herself, reports the Inquirer.
    The former Marine and black belt karate instructor retired in November 2009 one day before his arrest for assaulting his victim for six years starting when she was 12.

    After his arrest, the Police Department apologized for not making the charges agains Wiggins public sooner.
