Lights go out at two area malls due to power outages on Black Friday

Black Friday has brought a temporary blackout to two different malls in the area.

In Delaware blackouts are being reported at the Christiana Mall, a Black Friday destination for many shoppers.

According to a mall spokesperson, the blackouts have been caused by a utility problem and the power company has been contacted.

At this time there is no estimate on how long the lights will be out.

A problem at an Essex County substation cut power to The Mall at Short Hills in Millburn on Friday morning as well.

Jersey Central Power & Light says a problem at one of its substations in Essex County cut power to The Mall at Short Hills in Millburn on Friday morning, reports the Associated Press.

JCP&L spokesman John Anderson tells the Associated Press the outage occurred at 6:58 a.m. and lasted about 10 minutes before power was restored.

The outage also affected parts of Summit, Millburn, Madison and Short Hills.

The cause is under investigation, and Anderson says crews are monitoring the scene.

According to its website, the mall was scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Friday.
