Lawyers reviewing emails for Kane to get up to $880 an hour

Lawyers hired by state Attorney General Kathleen Kane to search thousands of emails on state servers for pornography and other offensive content will be paid at rates ranging up to $880 an hour.

The compensation for five lawyers involved in the review is spelled out in a newly signed contract made public Friday between Kane’s office and the Washington law firm of Buckley Sandler. The rates are discounted from the firm’s usual rates, and the lowest is $205.

Kane named one of the firm’s partners, former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, to lead the review. Gansler has agreed to work for roughly $80 an hour, which matches Kane’s salary.

Gansler said the contract’s being signed means the review can start next week.
