In photos: A car guy on American and Hazzard Streets

I’ve never been a car person, but you have to admit that the sight of a bright yellow 1957 Chevy in front of a garage painted in yellow, is irresistible.

The Wito Tire shop garage on American and Hazzard streets ( I didn’t make this up; it’s not my fault if it sounds like a address from a Mickey Spillane novel ) is owned by Hector Irizarry and his sons.

Irizarry said he remembers working on cars “desde pequeno” since he was a young boy growing up in Puerto Rico. He’s taught his sons and his daughter, who works as a nurse at Cooper Hospital in Camden, everything he knows about mechanics, from dismantling an old car to navigating today’s computerized systems.
