How local beaches rank in water quality

Looks like New Jersey beaches could learn a thing from Delaware.

Dewey and Rehoboth beaches ranked among the top in the nation for water quality in a report from the National Resources Defense Council. The honor is given to beaches for high water quality and frequent testing.

Here are the five rating categories:

    water quality 2010
    water quality last 3 years
    water quality testing frequency
    always issues advisories promptly
posts closings/advisories online and at beach

The Sussex County beaches each earned five stars. In New Jersey, most but not all beaches got stars for water quality in 2010 and the last three years, as well as a star for posting advisories. Only Avalon and Belmar got the prompt advisories star. None earned the testing frequency star.
