Gay rights organization to name award after Adler

Just a day after his death, former New Jersey Congressman John Adler is being honored by a gay rights organization.

Garden State Equality will name an award after Adler, who, as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, helped pass laws to ensure civil rights to gays and lesbians, the Associated Press reports.

The first award, to be given in June, will go to Barbara Casbar Siperstein, an activist for the rights of transgendered people.

Adler died Monday from complications of staph bacterial endocarditis, for which he underwent heart surgery last month.
