Former Delaware cop charged with raping woman while on the job
A former police officer in Laurel, Del. has been charged with a raping a woman after encountering her when he responded to a domestic dispute involving the victim and her boyfriend.
Charged in 2006 with raping a woman after a traffic stop, Kevin Hovatter has been a registered sex offender since 2007. As the Associated Press reports, new charges against him say Hovatter had inappropriate contact with the victim at the police station. The victim continued to meet with Hovatter throughout the next two years, as she feared being arrested. During that time, Hovatter reportedly continued to abuse the woman.
Hovatter has been charged with rape and sexual extortion and held for $40,000 bail.
Note: The AP has corrected and WHYY’s Mark Eichmann has confirmed Hovatter was an officer in Laurel, Del., not with the state police.
